abstract = "The purpose of this study is to generate a susceptibility map of
the pollutants transfer from intensive pig farming to aquatic
systems in Palmitinho County, northwest of Rio Grande do Sul,
using cartographical data in a Geographic Information System
environment. Our proposal aims to support pig farmers and
municipal managers to define the priority areas for environmental
management. The cartographic data used for the generation of
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) were extracted from the topographic
map of Palmitinhos in a 1:50.000 scale. The pixel size was 20
meters. From the DEM was determined the Topographic Wetness Index
(TWI) and the Topographic Sediment Transport Capacity Index
(TSTCI). The TWI and TSTCI were reclassified into five classes and
proceeded to the cross tabulation. The 25 resulting combinations
were grouped into four classes (Low, Medium, High and Very High)
considering the susceptibility of the pollutants transfer into
aquatic systems. Subsequently, were integrated into the map the
buffer with the permanent preservation areas along the
watercourses and the buffer of the pig farms. The generation of
the susceptibility map allowed the identification of priority
sites for the implementation of conservation management
techniques, being them the farms located close to water courses
(punctual sources of pollution) and agricultural areas (diffused
sources of pollution) where the pig slurry is applied as
fertilizer, located along the water courses in a permanent
preservation area.",
